Description

It is the purpose of this volume to present a survey of currently available experimental techniques for the study of various aspects of the combustion of condensed phase materials and to suggest new methods of measurement. This volume is a sequel to and complement of Volume 53 of the AIAA Progress in Astronautics and Aeronautics series titled "Experimental Diagnostics in Gas Phase Combustion Systems."

This book contains selected papers dealing with the experimental aspects of the combustion of such widely differing materials as wood, solid propellants, and coal. The combustion of a solid material generally involves a sequence of events involving all or some of the following: heating of the solid phase; liquefaction, sublimation, or pyrolysis of the solid phase; secondary pyrolysis reactions in the gas phase; mixing the gaseous fuels with the appropriate oxidizer; the partial or complete combustion of the gaseous fuels to from gaseous, liquid, or solid products; and the feedback of heat and reactive species from the combustion flame to the sold for maintaining the overall combustion process. Most of the papers included in this volume deal with various aspects of this sequence of combustion, each of which is an area of current interest.
